against the MoReq 2010 standard. This paper will draw upon experience of implementing a Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and Automated Intelligence Compliance Extender for a private sector organisation. It will describe approaches to implementing governance and security considering not only the technology but the organisation, roles and responsibilities that are required and the policies, procedures and processes that must be established. Examples will be accompanied by screenshots. The paper will not only look at the SharePoint system itself but supporting activities including migration and cleansing that are required.

The theme for this years IRMS annual conference will be based on:

Information Governance, Security and Law
Information assets are part of the life-blood of an Organisation. In this age of information explosion- with more and more information gathered, stored and moved about, how we best keep our information assets secure and best utilise them in a timely, appropriate and lawful manner is both increasingly important and increasing complex to achieve. Today’s sessions explore contemporary Information Governance and Information Risk Management themes, issues and solutions from public sector, private sector and regulatory perspectives.

Head in the Cloud, Boxes in the Basement
Information and Records Management is in a dynamic place which sees the Profession on the one hand venturing into Cloud storage and other electronic futures and on the other maintaining runs of paper records in boxes. Today both explores where we find ourselves and where we may be going whilst also offering practical sessions in both the cutting edge and the more traditional end of what we do.

Richard Jeffrey-Cook will be presenting on Tuesday 29 May 2012 on the subject matter of Implementing Information Governance and Security in Microsoft SharePoint 2010. For booking please contact IRMS

Banks need to be able to respond efficiently to customers’ requests to see their personal data. Speaking at an event held by the British Bankers’ Association, the UK’s deputy information commissioner David Smith called on banks to take their obligation to give customers’ access to the data they hold on them seriously. “Getting it right on data protection doesn’t just mean keeping data secure,” he said. “The law also gives individuals an important right to remain in control of their information.

“I want to remind banks of the need to take this obligation seriously, providing full responses in a timely manner,” Smith said.

He warned that the recent ruling that many banks had mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) means that customers are likely to exercise that right. “We cannot have a repeat of the situation we were in two years ago when the unfair bank charges ruling took place. Our case workers were swamped with complaints from customers who hadn’t received a satisfactory response from the banks.”

A recent study by Which? Money found that by far most common kind of complaint about banks’ data protection practices concerns this obligation to disclose customer data on request. The ICO received 271 valid complaints of this kind last year.

IFC are able to provide a wide range of solutions to solve this problem, including review and process improvements for disclosure processes, information asset profiling and mapping and advice and assistance in relation to information retention and destruction. If you are interested in hearing more call: Julie Burcham on 01923 283694 or email Julie Burcham

On Thursday 7th April 2011, the Intellect Document and Content Group held a seminar on issues to do with document management. One of the sessions involved Malcolm Beach, one of IFC’s senior consultants, discussing a paper which provides guidance on developing a policy for destroying paper records. Despite the growth of electronic information, most organisation’s still receive and use paper records. These must be managed effectively, and the starting point to do so is to have a policy for how to deal with them.

This paper is a useful resource for anyone looking to develop a policy, or to understand what such a policy should contain. Click here to download the whitepaper.

Organisations are suddenly realising they are sitting on a toxic information mountain that has serious corporate ramifications both from a legal perspective and corporate reputational risk aspect. Some however have discovered this too late with numerous examples of mislaid tapes, vital records lost or destroyed resulting in fines, legal action or lost customers.
