Peter Benfell has a background in public sector finance with past roles including Records Management Advisor to both the New Zealand Treasury and New Zealand Debt Management Office, and as Information Manager with the United Kingdom Debt Management Office. He has practical experience in paper and electronic record keeping, and in developing strategies for optimising records collections to meet business, evidential, and cultural needs. Between 2002 and 2005 he served on the Executive of the Association of Departmental Records Officers, an ex-officio group representing the interests of central government records managers.

Holding masters degrees in Music (M.Mus., Victoria University of Wellington), and Records Management (M.Sc., Northumbria University), Peter has a strong academic interest in records and information management to support his hands-on experience and 'lateral thinking' approach to solving record keeping issues. His research interests include managing email as records (masters dissertation 'Email client software functionality and record keeping: an evaluation') and the validity of current models for organising information in electronic environments.
